Wallace gazed on these people with the detached interest of the tourist, the student of French culture, seeing for the first time images of Paris he knew only from books, movies, and the press. He might also have wished he too was surrounded by friends and about to enjoy a summer swim. Other photos that combine the human and the monumental suggest that Wallace may simply have opened his camera shutter in the right place at the right time. A car whizzes through the foreground of a nicely framed view down the rue Soufflot to the Pantheon. In a picture of the Trocadero, a woman in a mint-green dress leads a little boy with one hand while shielding her eyes against the bright summer sun with the other (fig. 4.16).
